Open Shutter hosts international juried exhibit
What: “Exposure,” Open Shutter’s second annual juried exhibit

“Exposure” goes up at the Open Shutter Gallery this week. The show is the gallery’s second annual international juried exhibit and was judged by Open Shutter as well as world-renowned photographer Steve McCurry.

Seventy-two photographers from all over the globe will exhibit their black and white, color and alternative process photographs in the gallery. The show also includes six talented new photographers under the age of 18. The special awards, including Best of Show, Best of Color, Best of Black & White as well as seven excellence awards were selected by McCurry.
 
McCurry is credited as having taken “The world’s most recognizable photograph” of a young Afghan girl refugee in 1985. Seventeen years later, he defied odds and found her again in remote Afghanistan.

Robert Earl Keen returning to the Concert Hall
What: A local show from the legendary Texas troubadour

The legendary Robert Earl Keen returns to Durango’s biggest stage next week. Keen plays the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College on Aug. 17 in support of his new album, “Ready for Confetti.” Special guest Shannon McNally opens the show at 7:30 p.m.

Born in Houston, Keen got his start playing country music with Lyle Lovett on his front porch. Though he’s been hailed as “the most successful artist many Americans have never heard,” Keen’s songs have been recorded by George Strait, Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, the Dixie Chicks and the Highwaymen. He’s also been playing sold-out venues for more than 25 years.

“Ready for Confetti” (Lost Highway Records) is Keen’s 16th studio album and set for release on Aug. 30. The work is said to further showcase his talent as a songwriter as he paints vivid pictures of the characters he’s met during his travels.
