Smiley Theatre to host renowned oceanographer
What: A discussion of coral bleaching by Tom Goreau
Where: The Smiley Theatre, 1309 E. Third Ave.
When: Wed., May 26. 7 p.m.

Durangoans can take a look beneath the surface of the sea next week. Imagining Solutions presents a talk with Tom Goreau, oceanographer and UN spokesperson, on May 26 in the Smiley Theatre.

Goreau is the founder and president of the Global Coral Reef Alliance (GCRA), a nonprofit advocating coral reef protection. He works with tropical fishing communities around the world to restore their reefs and fisheries and invented the HotSpot method used to correctly predict location, timing, extent and severity of coral bleaching.

“Coral reefs provide most of the marine biodiversity, fisheries, shore protection and tourism for over 100 countries. All of this depends on having healthy corals. No other organism can do this,” he said.

The GCRA predicts that 2010 will be one of the worst years for coral reef death ever. However, the GCRA and Goreau are working to undo the damage. They have developed a method that allows reefs to survive and recover from damage caused by excessive nutrients, climate change, and physical destruction.

The talk begins at 7 p.m. For more information, call 903-6273.
