‘Gastropod’ plays the Durango stage
What: The world premiere of the stage/art performance
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: June 16, 17 & 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Cutting-edge theatre continues its march through Durango next
week. The original show “Gastropod” shows at the Abbey
Theatre on June 16, 17 & 18.
Presented by the Heart Hustle Collective,
“Gastropod” (“Belly-Foot”) takes audience
members on a surreal journey. Nestled in their own secluded world,
two snails – one practically immobile and one insatiably
restless – struggle and depend on one another as their shared
shell begins to fall apart. Gastropod is a classic
coming-of-age story with an imaginative twist, exploring the thin
lines that separate love and dependency, home and immobility. The
performance features original art, video, choreography and sound by
emerging artists from Seattle, Portland, Brooklyn, Durham, San
Diego, Durango and Israel. In addition, the local performance will
mark “Gastropod’s” world premiere.
The show begins each night at 7:30 p.m. Visit www.hearthustlecollective.com for more information.

Cadillac Sky goes on at the Abbey Theatre
What: A local show from the rising alternative bluegrass band
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Thurs., June 11. Doors open at 8 p.m.
“Psychobilly bluegrass” goes on stage in Durango
this week. Cadillac Sky plays the Abbey Theatre tonight, June
11.
“Original,” “innovative,”
“fearless,” “ambitious” and
“propulsive” are all words describing the Cadillac Sky
experience. However, the band members themselves are rooted in
humility and simply hope to “just make good music.” The
bluegrass band looks as much to Radiohead and the Beatles for
inspiration as it does Bill Monroe. Cadillac Sky’s sophomore
release, “Gravity’s Our Enemy,” embodies this
ideal. The boys’ ever-increasing following also attests to
the fact that the combination is working.
“They completely blew me away, they were jogging around on
the top of their strings, sniffing out new territory with rampant
curiosity,” Folkwax wrote of a recent performance.
David Mayfield, guitar and vocals, noted that Cadillac strives
for enthusiasm and “transfer of honest energy” in each
of its live shows. “We try to have every show be its own
entity,” he said. “We want every show to be live,
literally. We want the audience to see the show breathing in front
of their eyes.”
Durangoans can get a glimpse this Thursday. Doors open at 8 p.m.
For more information, call 385-1711.
