Movies del Mundo to play the Smiley Theatre
What: A monthly multicultural film screening and potluck

Movies del Mundo goes on screen at the Smiley Theatre this week.
Del Alma, the La Plata Unity Project, Compañeros and the
Latina Initiative have partnered to bring the multicultural
screening and event to Durango. The monthly event kicks off Friday
with a showing “Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad.”
The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a Mexican themed potluck
and Spanish conversation (all levels welcome). Children are
welcome, and there will be Spanish themed games and activities. The
film rolls at 7 p.m. “Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad!”
takes viewers to the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, where in
2006, a broad-based, nonviolet, popular uprising exploded. “A
Little Bit of So Much Truth” captures the unprecedented media
phenomenon that emerged when thousands of school teachers,
housewives, indigenous people, health workers, farmers and students
took 14 radio stations and one TV station into their own hands.

Chocolate Fantasia returns for 23rd year
What: “Tropics of Chocolate,” the 23rd annual Chocolate Fantasia
Where: The Fort Lewis College Ballroom

Durangoans can step into a room filled with chocolate this week.
Chocolate Fantasia, the annual chocolate lover’s event,
returns to the Fort Lewis College Ballroom this Friday.
“Tropics of Chocolate” is the theme of the 23rd annual
event, and local restaurants and chefs will be competing for the
title of best chocolate creation in town. The indulgence gets under
way at 5:30 p.m.
Local chefs have created more than 200 chocolate delicacies all
around the theme of “Tropics of Chocolate.” A ticket
allows Fantasia participants to sample a variety of chocolate
creations and vote for the best tasting dessert. All proceeds from
ticket sales benefit the Volunteers for America Southwest Safehouse
and Durango Community Shelter. Volunteers of America works to serve
children, women and men in Durango who are fleeing from domestic
violence or struggling with homelessness.
As in all years, tickets to Chocolate Fantasia are limited, and
should be purchased in advance at North or South City Markets,
Albertson’s or other locations around town. A limited number
will also be available at the door.
