Valentine’s Day 5K set for this Saturday
What: The first running race of the 2009 season
Where: The Durango Community Recreation Center
When: Sat., Feb. 14 at 10 a.m.
Durango’s first foot race of 2009 leaves the starting line
this Saturday. Durango Parks and Recreation will host the annual
Valentine’s Day 5K at 10 a.m. The event starts and finishes
at the Durango Community Recreation Center.
The 2009 route will be an “out and back” along the
Animas River Trail. Runners, joggers, walkers, children and dogs
(on a leash) are all invited to participate in the
Valentine’s Day 5K.
All participants receive a unique beanie on race day, and the
event features a post-race gathering with raffle prizes. All
registered participants will receive a prize drawing ticket.
Runners and walkers can register at the Durango Community
Recreation Center or online at www.active.com prior to noon on
Feb. 13. Packet pick-up and race day registration takes place from
8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 14 in Durango Recreation

Author and activist brings Alaska to Durango
What: A film screening and presentation by Ricki Ott

Thirty-five years ago, former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, Alaska,
promised, “Not one drop of oil would touch Prince William
Sound.” The 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster invalidated that
claim in the worst way possible. Alaskan author, scientist and
storyteller Riki Ott brings her account of the nation’s
largest oil spill and the future of corporate/citizen relations to
Durango next week.
On Tues., Feb. 17, Ott will be on hand for a screening of the
film “Black Wave” at 6 p.m. at the Durango Arts Center.
The event is sponsored by the Durango Independent Film Festival,
and Ott will speak briefly before the film and lead a Q&A
session after.
The following evening, Feb. 18, Ott will give a presentation on
her newest book, Not One Drop, at 6 p.m. in 130 Noble Hall at
Fort Lewis College. The book is a cautionary tale on the struggle

Bear Smart to screen award-winning IMAX film
What: A film and food fund-raiser for Bear Smart Durango
Where: The Smiley Theatre, 1309 E. Third Ave.
When: Fri., Feb. 13 with a 6 p.m. reception and 7 p.m. screening
Local bruins will benefit from the silver screen this week. Bear
Smart Durango hosts a fund-raiser screening and reception for the
award-winning IMAX film, “Bears,” on Fri., Feb. 13.
“Bears” is the fourth and most anticipated
giant-screen film produced by the National Wildlife Federation. The
film explores the mythical past and fragile future of some of the
most misunderstood predators on the planet. From polar bears in the
arctic tundra to grizzlies in Alaska to black bears in Montana,
“Bears” presents bears in the full glory of their
natural habitats and depicts the challenges facing each
species.
The fund-raiser benefits Bear Smart Durango and gets under way
with a 6 p.m. pre-screening chili & chip reception, courtesy of
Carver Brewing and Zuberfizz. Attendees are encouraged to bring a
bear (any bear, be it fuzzy, hard, a toy or photo) for a Bear Gift
Sale. The film begins at 7 p.m.
