La Plata Skills Trade Collective hosts kick-off
What: A kick-off event for local barter-system group
Where: The Lost Dog, 1150 Main Ave.
When: Sat., Nov. 22 from 1-4 p.m.
Bartering could be the flavor of this holiday season. The La
Plata Skills Trade Collective hosts a kick-off event at the Lost
Dog this weekend. The group hopes to offer a resource for locals
looking to exchange goods or services. The Nov. 22 event will
include live music by Colin Rooney.
The La Plata Skills Trade Collective is a group of local
individuals who are responding to rapid changes in the environment
and economy. The group hopes to take skills, time, goods and
equipment and trade with others in efforts to strengthen personal
and community resilience. With this in mind, the Collective is
hoping to engage the community with a kick-off event.
“We believe that individuals can share and trade the
resources they already possess to create a community that meets its
own needs for goods, services, wellness and entertainment,”
said Minna Jain, one of the Collective’s founders. “And
there’s no reason it can’t be fun! Whether you’re
trading your time, a skill you’re passionate about or the use
of some equipment you have, you get connected to other creative
folks in your community, and it opens you up to experiences and
acquaintances you might miss if you meet your needs solely
‘on-the-economy.’”
The Saturday kick-off is scheduled for 1-4 p.m., and members of
the public are encouraged to show up with services or goods to
swap. The Collective also hosts monthly skills sharing gatherings,
organizes ongoing classes and publishes a bi-monthly Community
Trade publication. For more information, call 375-0855.

Chicago-based Algernon plays the Summit
What: A local show from the acclaimed jazz/rock quintet
Where: The Summit, 699 Main Ave.
When: Thurs., Nov. 20 at 9:30 p.m.
“Neopsycedelicpostrockjazz” takes the stage in
Durango this week. Algernon, a jazz/rock quintet from Chicago,
plays the Summit this Thursday.
Algernon creates a fusion of indie rock, jazz and classical
chamber music. The effect is that of a distinctly modern band,
providing musical clues to our modern landscape. The band boasts
combined experience in genres from jazz to hard rock, from punk to
classical.
Algernon finished its second album, “Familiar
Espionage,” in 2007, recording direct to analog tape. This
new set of work finds the band pushing the compositional aspect of
their sound to new heights. The band’s recordings and live
performances are drawing rave reviews from audience members and
critics alike.
“Using two guitars, bass, drums and a vibraphone, Algernon
combines gorgeous melodies with psychedelic effects and rock
beats,” wrote The Chicago Sun Times of the group.
Chicago Jazz Magazine had similar praise for the band,
writing, “This isn’t fusion where jazz guys play rock
instruments at rock volume, this is jazz guys playing something
that splits jazz and rock right down the middle.”
Algernon goes on at the Summit at 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 20. For more
information, call 247-2324.

REEL Environmental Experience makes return
What: The FLC Environmental Center’s benefit film festival
Where: The Smiley Theatre, 1309 E. Third Ave.
When: Thurs., Nov. 20. Doors open at 6 p.m.
The Fort Lewis Environmental Center is turning to the silver
screen this week. The seventh annual REEL Environmental Experience
Film Festival will show environmentally minded films this Thursday
in the Smiley Theater. Doors to the benefit open at 6 p.m. and the
celluloid rolls at 7 p.m.
The Environmental Center hosts the festival each fall as a
fund-raiser for student projects. Among this year’s offerings
are films produced by FLC students and short films from Australia
and Great Britain. The feature film is an environmental fable from
Disney Pictures that takes audiences 700 years into the future,
when the fate of the Earth will depend on a little robot with a big
heart. Because of licensing restrictions, the center
can’t disclose the name of the feature film.
“Because the film just came out last summer and will be
coming out soon on DVD, Disney put certain restrictions on how we
can publicize the film,” explained Marcus Renner, the
center’s director. “In some ways it helps us. Getting a
big crowd in Durango depends on getting things into the grapevine,
and we hope the secret will get people talking about the
event.”
The Environmental Center has been a student-run community
resource for 17 years, providing information, hosting events and
piloting projects on campus and in the community. Renner says
the goal of the Center is twofold. “We want to make a
difference in the community. But we also want students to learn
skills that will help them continue to make a difference once they
leave Fort Lewis.”
For more information on the festival or the EC, visit: http://envcenter.fortlewis.edu/.
