Fifteen area nonprofit organizations will compete for their share of $20,500 this week at the Sky Ute Casino. The 9th annual Nonprofit Money Booth returns to the casino on May 20.

Since 1999, when Sky Ute Casino first opened the Non-Profit Money Booth, more than $190,000 has been given to local charities to support a variety of worthy causes. Last year, selected organizations included: Youth Baseball of Southwest Colorado, Tribal College Journal, Tri-County Head Start, Shiprock Amateur Baseball League, Sexual Assault Services Organization, Manna Soup Kitchen, La Plata Family Centers Coalition, Ignacio Friends of the Library, Housing Solutions for the Southwest, Four Corners Good Samaritan Village, Durango High School Native American Club, Ducks for Bucks, Childhaven, Blue Star Mother’s of America, and Annie’s Orphans.

This year’s event kicks off with a cocktail reception in the Rolling Thunder Hall from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. During the reception, the selected organizations will be honored and each presented a $500 check. The action gets under way at 7:30 p.m. when a representative from each organization will enter the money booth for 45 seconds to grab as much cash as they can.

Taste of Durango returns to Main on Sunday
What: The annual celebration of local food and libations
Where: Durango’s Main Avenue
When: Sun., May 18 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Food, drink and music take over downtown Durango this Sunday with the return of the annual Taste of Durango. A section of Main Avenue will be closed to traffic, and more than 40 food and beer booths from local restaurants and breweries will take the place of cars.

Awards will be given in categories such as: “Definitely Durango” for a taste that reflects the spirit of the town; “Most Tantalizing Taste” for the most intriguing dish; and “Most Creative Cuisine.” New this year is “Durango’s Best Cooks Competition.” Durango High School Pro Start cooks will be doing cooking demonstrations, and local cooks and chefs will be cooking to impress at this competition that is hopefully our first of many.

Durango musicians will set the backdrop for the event on the main stage. For younger tasters, activity booths will be set up featuring a jump-around, the Catch It Quick Jugglers, and activities from the Durango Children’s Museum, San Juan Citizens’ Alliance and the Family Center. All proceeds from the event benefit the Manna Soup Kitchen.

As in past years, participants are asked to leave their four-leggeds at home and to “Eat, drink and be merry, for on the morrow ’tis back to work we go!”

Durango to host women’s wellness symposium
What: The first-ever Women’s Cancer & Survivorship Symposium
Where: Fort Lewis College
When: Sat., May 17 with registration from 8:15-8:50 a.m.

Durango is playing host to another first-ever this weekend. The Women’s Cancer & Survivorship Symposium lands at Fort Lewis College on Saturday. Featured speakers will provide insights into treatment, prevention, leading-edge research and important issues in the fight against the deadly disease.

B.J. Boucher, community coordinator for the Women’s Wellness Connection, has dedicated much of her life to developing programs for women who are undergoing cancer treatment and for cancer survivors. Boucher is enthusiastic about the symposium and says it will bring much-needed awareness to the area regarding issues faced by women during and after cancer treatment.

“I believe this symposium is the first of its kind for the Four Corners,” she said. “The agenda for the public conference contains a lot of valuable information from which we all can learn. We have some incredible presenters who are leaders in their fields.”

Boucher encourages community members and others to attend Saturday’s free event. “This free public forum will help women who are being treated for cancer and will help women who have survived cancer,” she said. “I sincerely hope that every woman in the area will consider attending this symposium.”

Organizers are also stressing that area health providers should attend the related two-day women’s cancer conference for medical professionals, which begins Fri., May 16, and runs concurrently with the public conference on Saturday. Medical providers can earn education credits for attending.

Durango’s strays will be out in search of permanent homes this weekend. The La Plata County Humane Society hosts its 6^th annual Adopt-A-Thon this Friday and Saturday. With litter season in full swing, the goal of the event is to find permanent homes for all of the animals living at the shelter.

A variety of activities are on tap for the Adopt-A-Thon. Allison Ragsdale Photography will be on hand taking professional pet portraits in a special fund-raising event from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on May 17. For only $20, owners can purchase a 5x7 portrait of their pet with all proceeds benefiting the Humane Society.

Four Corners broadcasting will provide a live remote broadcast from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on both days. In addition, a variety of live music performances will be provided by Dave Mensch of Formula 151, The Silver Mountain String Band, and Gigi Love & Howie Basley.

The Humane Society Thrift Store will also be holding special sales during this event, and food and refreshments will be available throughout the Adopt-A-Thon.
