Abbey screens epic about Genghis Khan
What: “Mongol,” an action-adventure epic, directed by Sergei Bodrov
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Through July 31. Call 385-1711 for showtimes
The cavalry charge toward the end of “Mongol” has to
be seen to be believed. Disguised to look like a small group of
horsemen, mounted warriors emerge through a narrow corridor created
by foot soldiers. Once in the open, the armed horsemen fan out
keeping wide spaces between riders. Why?
Floating like sharp, curved wings on each horse’s rump,
double swords are mounted behind each rider. As they approach the
enemy, the cavalrymen draw both swords and ride into the fray
blades held neck high.
“Mongol” is an epic film in the old-fashioned sense.
Directed by the prolific Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov
(“The Nomad,” “The Bear’s Kiss”),
“Mongol” is the first part of a trilogy. It tells the
story of a young Mongolian warrior named Temudgin (played by
Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano). His boyhood is evoked as he rides
with his father to pay respect to a rival tribe and choose a wife.
His choice is unusual and signals both a deep, lifelong bond and
tribal strife that lasts until Temudgin emerges as the Khan decades
later.
Director Bodrov follows his hero through a series of
captivity-escape-freedom sequences right up to a fierce
confrontation between rival armies. On the eve of world conquest in
1206 (subject of Part II), Temudgin emerges as the Mongol leader,
Genghis Khan. It is this battle, filmed in a high, barren valley
that brings out the spectacular cavalry charge – moviemaking
on a grand scale with a quasi historic, mythical hero at the
center. No wonder “Mongol” was a nominee for best
foreign film in 2007.
Last spring the Abbey brought us “Counterfeiters,”
the German film that won the top foreign award. Thanks for bringing
another nominee. Keep ’em coming.

Indie rock double-bill plays local show
What: Denver’s Born in the Flood and Durango’s …in a day
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Sat., July 26, 10 p.m.
Independent rock takes over Durango’s independent theatre
this weekend. Denver’s Born in the Flood and local band
…in a day will share the Abbey Theatre stage during an
all-ages show on Saturday.
Born in the Flood is a quartet built around lifelong friends
Nathaniel Rateliff and Joseph Pope III, who forged their
relationship and musical commitment as boys in the small
blue-collar town of Hermann, Mo. The pair eventually migrated to
Denver where they teamed up with guitarist Matt Fox and began their
journey as a rootsy, garage-rock band that evolved into the current
“signature sonic attack.” The group’s debut LP,
“If This Thing Should Spill” was released in 2007 and
garnered critical acclaim with Westword Magazine hailing the
album as “simply brilliant.”
Durango indie band ...in a day will also take the stage this
Saturday to release its new album, “The Motion Picture
EP.” Originally formed by Joseph Kaltenback and Joshua Bensik
in 2005, …in a day now includes the talents of percussionist
George Sears. The trio’s first effort, “The Motion
Picture EP,” includes six original recordings and one cover
title. Concertgoers on Saturday will received a free copy of the
album with every paid admission.
Tickets to the show are available at Southwest Sound and The
Abbey Theatre. For more information, call 385-1711.
