DAC unveils Four Corners Commission What: The 32nd annual installment of the juried exhibit Where: The Durango Arts Center, 802 E. Second Ave.     When: Jan. 8-Feb. 2 with an opening on Jan. 11 The Durango Arts Center’s annual juried show is one of its most popular exhibits for both artists and viewers. It is also one of the most unpredictable, given the array of art submitted as well as the fact that exhibit pieces are chosen based upon the discretion of a single juror. This year, the 32nd annual Juried Exhibit opens Jan. 8. “The juried show is broadly representative of the strengths of our artists, the community and what we represent,” said former DAC director Brian Wagner of a past exhibit. “It encompasses the diversity of views of the community.” The juror typically whittles a field of up to 170 entries down to 65 selections. The choices range from paintings, sculpture and pottery to photographs, mobiles and digitally produced pieces. From the selected works, the juror also chooses three artists to receive cash prizes. An opening for the show is scheduled for Fri., Jan. 11, from 5-7 p.m. The works will be on display through Feb. 2. For more information, call the Arts Center at 259-2606.

Ice Festival returns to the region What: The Durango Ice Festival Where: Cascade Canyon, the Abbey Theatre and Backcountry Experience When: Jan. 4-6 Durangoans will be pouring themselves on ice this weekend. The second annual Durango Ice Festival, sponsored by Southwest Adventure Guides, Backcountry Experience and The American Alpine Club, returns Jan. 4-6. Aimed at spreading a love of ice climbing, the festival offers instruction, gear demos and presentations throughout the weekend. Kicking off the event on Jan. 4 will be a slideshow from climber Jack Tackle and Allen Ottman at 6 p.m. at Backcountry Experience. The following morning, participants will hit the ice with a clinic in Cascade Canyon from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The day includes seminars on mixed climbing and women’s specific instruction. That night, the Abbey Theatre will host a 7 p.m. slide show on women’s steep ice climbing from Majka Burhardt. All proceeds from the fund-raiser will benefit the Women’s Resource Center.
