What: The 2nd annual Squawker Cross cyclocross race
Where: The Fort Lewis College campus
When: All day on Sun., Nov. 11, beginning at 8 a.m.
Cycling’s ultimate spectator sport rolls into Durango this
Sunday. The 2nd annual Squawker Cross cyclocross race returns to
Fort Lewis College on Nov. 11, and this year it brings many of the
nation’s top racers with it.
The race is a UCI categorized race, which means it feature some
of the best pros in the country as well as many top regional
competitors. The race will also get strong national media exposure.
Sponsored by the Fort Lewis College Cycling Team, Squawker Cross is
expected to draw about 200 competitors and 1,000 spectators.
Cyclocross is perhaps the best spectator discipline of cycling,
with racers negotiating numerous turns and dismounting and running
with their bikes across a 2-mile course. Cyclocross is also the
fastest growing discipline of cycling in the nation.
Local Elite Men confirmed at the event include Todd and Troy
Wells, Matt Shriver, Adam Snyder, Joey Thompson, Ned Overend,
Travis Brown and
Colorado-based Team Clif Bar. Top national and international
racers are also scheduled to make an appearance.
The course will meander all over the Fort Lewis College campus
on a great mix of grass, pavement, barriers, off-camber and a run
up in the outdoor amphitheater. Over half the course, including the
technical sections, is visible from near the start/finish and
perfect for spectators. Back again this year is the Ska beer garden
next to the barriers and announcer Dave Towle. In addition, the Zia
Taqueria Airstream will be on hand with food and refreshments.

When: Sat., Nov. 10 at 7: 30 p.m.; Sun., Nov. 11 at 4 p.m.
Illusion takes center stage in Durango this weekend.
Mysto’s Magic Spectacular, an all-ages, full-stage show of
magic, illusions, dancing and entertainment, plays on Saturday and
Sunday at the Henry Strater Theatre.
Directed by Sophie Hoyt, a recent Hollywood transplant, the
shows will be bursting with full-stage illusions, doves, rabbits
and more. Beefed up with professional lighting, sounds, special
effects and directing, the stage is set to explode with
sophisticated slight of hand. Joining Mysto the Magi on stage will

Michael “the Catch-It Quick” juggler. Spotlight to
Stardom winner and Mysto’s student, Mat Simonsen, will also

No “kiddie event,” the spectacular is for all
members of the family and libations will be flowing. Among other
black arts, Mysto will be cutting Hendrix into thirds and
levitating her. Meanwhile, Michael will showcase his mind-boggling
juggling tricks, and Simonsen will challenge the audience members
with his slight of hand. The Mataholla Belly-dancers will round out
the event by weaving the illusion of the “Temple of
Bazaares.”

office, Southwest Sound and online at www.durangovacations.com. A
portion of the proceeds from the shows will benefit the Boys and
Girls Club of La Plata County.

‘A Safer, More Compassionate World’
What: An all-day conference on fighting poverty and eliminating the sources of terrorism
Where: The Fort Lewis College Ballroom
When: Sat., Nov. 10, from 9:45 a.m.-4 p.m.
The Durango community and Fort Lewis College are stepping toward
a more compassionate world this Saturday. An all-day conference,
“A Safer, More Compassionate World,” will rally a group
of local individuals and keynote speakers to demonstrate the power
of small groups to fight poverty and reduce the sources of
terrorism around the globe. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters
of La Plata and the Fort Lewis Common Reading Experience, the
conference runs from 9:45 a.m.-4 p.m. in the FLC Ballroom.
The organization, “Our Voices Together,” has
sponsored a series of events around the country on the topic
“A Safer, More Compassionate World.” The forums are
highlighting ways communities can engage in what the 9/11
Commission termed the “Agenda of Opportunity” and
contribute to a future without the threat of terrorism.
Durango’s Nov.10 forum will focus on the ways in which
small groups of people can make a difference by creating a better
future for the very poorest among us. The keynote speakers will
include Diane Wilson, activist and author of An Unreasonable Woman;
Tom Grams, dentist to the Afghans; and John Mahan, pedal-power
social entrepreneur in Nepal and Haiti. In addition, there will be
a panel of local individuals who have found a way to connect with
the world.
