Moving Matter at the Summit
What: A show from the Austin-based jam rock band
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
When: Sat., June 16 at 9 p.m.
Durangoans can get a glimpse of the Austin music scene this
weekend. Moving Matter, a rock jam band from down south, plays a
Saturday show at the Summit. The group recently released its third
full-length album, “Live at Grego’s,” and is
complimenting the release with a Colorado tour.
Since relocating to the musical mecca of Austin from Fort
Collins in 2003, the band has continued to hone its high-energy
sound, frequently garnering praise and comparisons to such acts as
Sound Tribe Sector 9 and Particle. Bassist Chris Holland and
guitarist Josh Pearson share most of the song-writing duties, while
drummer Dan Mcgreevy captains the ship with his rock-steady beats.
Dustin Bozarth on keys has rounded out the sound by dropping
copious amounts of synth textures and Hammond organ into the
mix.
The live show is bolstered by the help of innovative lighting
and stage design by the band’s official fifth member, Jonezy,
who has been creating the visual score to the band’s music
since the Fort Collins days. The band currently tours with a rig of
intelligent lights, LED washes, inflatable aliens and a multitude
of “candy” for the eyes to compliment the psychedelic
waves of sound created by the band’s guitar and synth-led
musical journeys.
Durangoans can head out on this journey on June 16. The show
gets under way at 9 p.m. For more information, call the Summit at
247-2324.

Where: Starting and finishing at Durango Mountain Resort
When: Beginning on June 16
Adventure athletes will descend on Durango this weekend to test
their mettle in the 7th annual Adventure Xstream adventure race
series. On June 16, participants will compete in a range of
disciplines including mountain biking, paddling and trekking along
with orienteering, rappelling and Tyrolean traverse. This year, the
endurance race starts and finishes at Durango Mountain Resort, and
competitors ranging from weekend warriors to professionals will
challenge mind, body and fellow competitors on varied terrain.
Two courses offer solo, two-person and four-person teams the
option to customize their race experience. The 12-hour course spans
50 to 60 miles while the 24-hour course is nearly 100 miles long.
Both have more than a 3,200-foot elevation gain.
“Adventure racing is for the well-rounded
athlete,” says race organizer Will Newcomer. “People
want to test, and push, their abilities by conquering as many
events as possible.”
Each year competitors from around the country compete in the
event, including past Eco Challenge champions. Adventure Xstream is
a five-race series with events in Durango, Moab, Breckenridge and
Vail. Series champions are awarded qualifying spots into Adventure
Xstream: The Expedition, the 250- to 300-plus mile season finale
adventure race in Moab. For more information on the series, log
