Cinco de Mayo at a glance

The 12th annual Cinch de Mayo Fiesta takes place Sat, May 6, at Santa Rita Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event features arts and crafts booths; food; children’s activities including piñatas, face painting and games; raffles; donkey rides; and the “Bring Game” basketball tournament.

There also is a full slate of live music and dancing slated throughout the day. A schedule of events follows:

10:00 a.m. - Prayer service with the Sacred Heart Spanish Choir

10:50 a.m. - National Anthem sung by Durango High student Angelica Pozo-Desportes; El Himno Nacional Mexicano, sung by Carlos Tello.

11:00 a.m. - Presentation of peace

12:05 p.m. - Ballet Folklorico de Durango

12:25 p.m. - Hijos del Sur, “ranchera” style dance band

1:45 p.m. - Ernestine “La Jovencita” Romero, singer

2:20 p.m. - Ballet Folklorico de Durango

2:40 p.m. - Suzi Disanto and students from Park Elementary

2:55 p.m. - Student awards and scholarship presentation

3:05 p.m. - Hijos del Sur

3:40 p.m. - Ballet Folklorico de Durango

4:00 p.m. - “La Jovencita”

4:35 p.m. - Carlos Tello, dancer

4:40 p.m. - Hijos del Sur

5:00 p.m. – “La Jovencita”

The Cinch de Mayo celebration is presented by the Durango Latino Education Coalition with support from Crane & Tejada, The City of Durango, Sky Ute Casino, Community Bank Fund and CJ’s. Proceeds fund scholarships and support DLEC’s youth development programs. For more information, call 382-9693.
