A‘Fire burn singjay’ comes to the Summit
What: A show by reggae phenomenon Anthony B.
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
When: Mon., Jan. 16 at 9 p.m.
In conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, one of Jamaica’s top performers will play Durango. Anthony B. goes on stage at the Summit on Monday.
Anthony B. has become the driving force behind the resurgence of dancehall music. Growing up in Clarks Town, Jamaica, he was disowned by his family for growing dreadlocks. As an entertainer, he has developed a strong Rastafari socio-political stance.
Since 1996, Anthony B has released an astounding 19 albums, more than 500 singles and appears on more than 100 other albums. Anthony B. burst on the scene with “Fire Burn Rome.” The album was a breakthrough for dancehall music, setting a new standard for consciousness. Since that first release, Anthony B. has never veered from that path, always championing the downtrodden.
Anthony B. is also the original “fire burn singjay.” A “singjay” is an artist who combines the talents of singer and DJ. “Fire burn” is when the musician “burns the fire on the wickedness and unjust system.” With this in mind, Anthony B.’s shows are not preachy. The message can be heard in his live shows, but more visible is one of the most dynamic performances in reggae today.
Anthony B. first performed in Durango on Sept. 11, 2001. The president of Fort Lewis College made the show free and it became an uplifting experience for everyone involved. Monday’s show gets under way at 9 p.m. For more information, call the Summit at 247-2324.
