Breast Cancer Awareness Month at a glance

• A “Pink Fiesta” will be hosted by The Women’s Health Coalition of Southwest Colorado on Fri., Oct. 15, at 5:30 p.m. The event will raise money for its emergency fund for cancer patients who need help with nonmedical expenses. There will be an all-female mariachi band, a “Fiesta Market” (a.k.a. silent auction) and a fashion show during dinner with clothing modeled by local breast cancer survivors. Pink Fiesta tickets can be bought before Oct. 11 by calling 247-0278, Ext. 3.

• A “Zumbathon” takes place Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Durango Recreation Center. Five local Zumba instructors are joining forces to raise money for the Durango office of the American Cancer Society. The event is in honor of breast cancer survivor Lisa Wilk. More info: www.zumbadurango.com.

• “Pink Streaks” takes place again this year with 19 local hair salons dyeing pink streaks – temporary or permanent – in hair. The cost of the streak (typically $20) is donated to the Women’s Health Coalition of Southwest Colorado’s emergency fund.

• Free mammograms are available for Colorado residents 40-64 years old with certain income requirements through the Women’s Wellness Connection. Contact 259-3527.

• Durango’s Integrated Health Solutions is offering specials for women scheduling breast cancer screenings this month (for appointments through November). The tests screen for hormone imbalances and inflammations that are indicators of breast cancer. Female family members can schedule two treatments for the price of one, and girlfriends can schedule one and get the second half-price. integratedhealth.buzztown.com.
