Short Track series returns

Short track racing returns to Durango this summer with the DEVO and Animas Orthopedics Associates Short Track series. The races take place every Wednesday night for 11 weeks starting June 2. Race venues will rotate between the Factory Trails at Fort Lewis College (aka the disc golf course), Durango BMX and Durango Mountain Resort’s new short track. For the uninitiated, DEVO’s Chad Cheeney describes short track as a 10- to 30-minute race around a 2- to 6-minute loop, consisting of double track and singletrack trails. “This kind of racing is great for all abilities, is a great short workout and is a super fun spectator sport,” said Cheeney.

Racing gets under way at 5:30 p.m. with a 20-minute B mens/womens race. Kids racing begins at 6 p.m. and the A men/women will race at 6:30 p.m. Each race will be scored in an overall results format, with men and women separate. Juniors will be lumped in, with age noted next to their placing. The series will not be scored as an overall points series.

Small money primes will be awarded throughout the series depending on turnout with other proceeds going to support Durango DEVO.

Durango DEVO and DMR are also announcing a new series this summer, “The Coca-Cola Triple Crown.” The three-race series kicks off with a circuit race June 19, a hill climb and super downhill July 24 and a cross country race Aug. 14.
