Local ‘Spay Month’ scheduled for February
What: An effort to combat area pet overpopulation
Where: AspenTree Animal Caring Center
When: Feb. 1-29
Durango is getting “humane” during the
month of February. A local cooperative effort will sponsor “Spay
Month” in coming weeks in an effort to combat area pet
overpopulation.
Dogster’s Spay and Neuter Program (aka DSNiP) and
the AspenTree Animal Caring Center are partnering with The Doris Day Animal
Foundation and The Humane Society to promote the event. The groups are
hoping to encourage low cost spay/neuter as a loving act benefiting animal
guardians, their pets and their communities.
The benefits of spay/neuter are far-ranging and
numerous. Fixed animals tend to be healthier and have fewer behavioral
problems. They do not contribute to the overpopulation problem, so fewer
animals end up homeless in shelters or on the streets. Currently, shelter
workers nationwide are forced to euthanize an estimated 3 to 4 million
homeless cats and dogs each year. During the coming month, each La Plata
County resident is encouraged to help solve this problem by sponsoring the
spay or neuter of at least one cat or dog. Since Spay Day USA’s
inception in 1995, participants have spayed or neutered more than 1 million
animals, saving millions of animal lives and taxpayer dollars.
