Relay for Life takes on cancer
What: The annual American Cancer Society fund-raiser
Where: Escalante Middle School
When: June 11 & 12

Locals will take up the fight and walk to beat cancer this week. On June 11 & 12, the Relay for Life returns to the track at Escalante Middle School. Teams of 8 to 15 people take part in the event, and each member must raise $100 to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The relay is held from Friday night until Saturday morning, and team members take turns walking, running, pedaling, skating or rocking on the middle school track. Last year's event raised more than $150,000 to benefit cancer patients in La Plata County. Sixty percent of relay funds stay in the participating community to provide services for local cancer patients, like the breast cancer support program, Reach to Recovery. The remaining 40 percent is used to fund cancer research, which ultimately benefits local cancer patients by improving treatments.

The event will begin with an opening ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 11. A victory lap by cancer survivors will follow and the relay is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and end 12 hours later. Relay teams can sign up as late as the start of the event. For more information or to register a team, call 247-0278.

Abbey hosts Brian Jordan Band
What: A groove/funk concert by the guitarist for Karl Denson's Tiny Universe
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Saturday, June 12. Doors open at 9 p.m.

Groove, funk and jazz will dominate the stage and dance floor at the Abbey Theatre this weekend. The Brian Jordan Band and former P-Funk Allstar Starr Cullars play on Saturday, June 12. In addition to fronting his own band, Jordan is the guitarist for Karl Denson's Tiny Universe.

Jordan studied music at UC Santa Barbara and performed in the university's top jazz ensembles. Upon moving back to San Diego, he co-founded one of San Diego's most eclectic bands, Daddy Longleggs, which also included Robert Walter of the Greyboy Allstars and Robert Walter's Twentieth Congress. After five years, Daddy Longleggs disbanded, and Brian began touring with International reggae artists such as Foundation (from Jamaica), Victor Essiet and the Mandators (from Nigeria), and "Ishmael" Sealy (from Barbados). In 1999, Jordan hooked up with Karl Denson's Tiny Universe.

In the past five years, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, with Jordan heading up the strings department, has been taking the country by storm. The band is now stronger then ever and looking to make 2004 its biggest year yet. Jordan has played a large part in the growth of KDTU.

Jordan blends world music and Afro-funk with hints of jazz. With a humble stage presence, Jordan lets his guitar do the talking. He has said that his mission going into this new millennium has been "to emerge with free-form musical expression and master higher levels of cosmic vibration."

Cullars, of P-Funk fame, has become a bit of an Abbey Theatre fixture of late. This Saturday, she and her bass and deep vocal stylings will join Jordan on stage. Doors open at 9 p.m., and the show is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Call 385-1711 for details.
