Abbey screens The Tour Baby!'
What: A benefit screening of a behind-the-scenes look at the Tour de France
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Saturday, May 29, 7 p.m.
As Durango celebrates the
33rd annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, locals will have an
opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at cycling's greatest
challenge the Tour de France. On May 30 & 31, the Abbey Theatre
will show "The Tour Baby!," a humorous and realistic look at the
tour. All proceeds from the event will go to the Lance Armstrong
Foundation, an organization dedicated to enhancing lives of those
living with and beyond cancer, and to the Durango Wheel
Club.
Armed with only a digital
video camera, a passion for cycling and the Avis rental van he
called home, Scott Coady filmed "The Tour Baby!" Going from a
complete outsider at the start of the race to standing atop the
winner's podium at the finish, Coady not only filmed the race, he
became part of it. Along the way, he met and captured on film
exclusive interviews and events that make the Tour de France so
special. Scenes include Lance Armstrong in his hotel room, Robin
Williams, Jean Marie Leblanc (Director of the Tour de France), Phil
Liggett and Paul Sherwen, crazed tour fans, US Postal Riders in the
team bus and in their hotel rooms, getting up close and personal
with the podium babes, Lance and Pantani battling it out atop Mt.
Ventoux and the after-race parties in Paris.Davis Phinney, one time
Tour de France rider, commented, "This film brought back memories
both painful and poignant. I loved it."
Bob Babbitt of
Competitor Magazine wrote, "Three parts Wayne's World and
two parts Tour de France, The Tour Baby!' is the ultimate cycling
fantasy film."
The film is being brought
to Durango by local Katie Walsh, who was diagnosed with breast
cancer in April of 2003. More than one year later, she is back on
her bike, running again and pledging to raise at least $2,000 for
the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
For more information,
contact Walsh at (928) 713-2951.

Summit hosts Seth Yacovone Band
What: A show by the up and coming singer-songwriter-guitarist Seth Yacovone
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
When: Friday, May 28, at 9 p.m.
Burlington, Vt.-based
Seth Yacovone Band will take the stage at the Summit this Friday.
The young guitarist is rapidly gaining a global reputation and
following.
The trio is made up of
singer-songwriter-guitarist Yacovone, bassist Tom Coggio and
drummer Steve Hadeka. To date, SYB has released four albums and is
currently touring behind its latest release "Standing on the
Sound."
Yacovone's talents have
garnered praise from some high place. Phish frontman Trey Anastasio
said of him, "(Seth is) incredibly soulful and a natural talent,
not to mention a great guy. I loved this guy from the first moment
I heard him play. Seth and I have played together a number of times
since, and I go see him whenever I get a chance."
Relix Magazine wrote: "Yacovone is past the point
where he can cash in on the fact that he's a young gun who plays a
mean guitar. It's now time to deliver the goods, and Yacovone does
just that on Standing on the Sound.'"
SYB has opened for an incredibly diverse group of National Acts
including: Ray Charles, BB King, moe., The Wailers, Derek Trucks
Band, Little Feat, Noel Redding and John Entwistle Band. The band

R. Carlos Nakai to play Mesa Verde
What: The high point of the Mesa Verde Country Indian Arts and Western Culture Festival
Where: Mesa Verde's Morefield Amphitheatre
When: Saturday, May 29 at 7 p.m.
Renowned American Indian
flutist R. Carlos Nakai will perform in the region this weekend.
This Saturday, Nakai will perform as part of the Mesa Verde Country
Indian Arts and Western Culture Festival. The show takes place at 7
p.m. at Mesa Verde's Morefield Amphitheatre.
Nakai crafts his own
flutes and views each flute less as a musical instrument than "as a
sound sculpture a piece of art that also creates sound." Part of
his philosophy is to ensure that the native flute does not become a
"museum piece." Through his original compositions, Nakai shows the
instrument's versatility and capabilities.
Of his music, Nakai
commented, "A lot of what I've been taught culturally comes from an
awareness of the environment How I feel is based on my
impressions of being in certain spaces at certain
times."
A prolific musician and
composer, Nakai has 27 albums in commercial distribution, including
18 releases on Canyon Records. He is the second American Indian to
receive the Governor of Arizona's Arts Award and he has been
nominated for three Grammy awards.
The performance by Nakai
is part of a week-long festival featuring a world-class juried
Indian art market, Indian dances, Navajo rug auction, special
archaeological tours and exhibits, book signings, concerts, and a
variety of American Indian cultural programs. For a complete
schedule of events visit www.mesaverdecountry.com or call
800-530-2998.
