Studies presents the exhibits "Today's Navajo Weavers" and "A Stirring Story: Navajo and Pueblo
Spoons." "Today's
Navajo Weavers" features the work of nearly 40 Navajo weavers. "A
Stirring Story" is a traveling exhibit from the Wheelwright Museum
of the American Indian and features spoons and other flatware that
were among the earliest products of Navajo and Pueblo silversmiths.

Celebrate 10 years of Cinco de Mayo
What: A day-long fiesta including music, dancing, food and more

When: Saturday, May 8, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
For the 10th year,
Durango will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a fiesta at Santa Rita
Park. The celebration runs Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and will be
crammed with events and local entertainers.
The family affair will be
complete with ongoing music and dancing by local performers
including Mariachi de Durango, Ballet Folklorico of Durango, Tucson
y Los Amigos, Suzy diSanto, Flamenco dancer Renee Gokey, and Margy
and Manuel. Back by popular demand, a favorite from the teen-age
crowd, Ernestine Romero (La Jovencita) will make a presentation on
the stage. The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet's Folklorico Mexicano group
will also visit Durango for the fiesta.
Other events include
jalape`F1o and watermelon eating contests, a silent auction, free
children's games, pi`F1ata bursting, "Journey Through Our
Heritage," traditional food and more.

Spring Gallery Walk returns
What: The annual Durango Spring Gallery Walk
Where: 10 galleries in downtown Durango
When: Friday, May 7, from 5-9 p.m.
Local fine art galleries
will open their doors for the 18th annual Durango Spring Gallery
Walk this Friday.
Each fall and spring, The
Durango Gallery Association provides a chance for art lovers to
spend the night strolling in and out of the many receptions that
coincide with the event.
Gallery-goers will have a
lot of ground to cover between 5 & 9 p.m. with 10 galleries
participating. They include: the Open Shutter Gallery, the Durango
Arts Center, Angels & Lights Gallery, Ellis Crane Gallery,
Durango International Fine Arts Gallery, Image Counts Gallery, the
Kiln Door, Rain Dance Gallery, Sorrel Sky Gallery and Toh-Atin
Gallery.
This spring's walk will,
as always, include appetizers, beverages and entertainment at each
of the galleries. Walkers can obtain a free "passport" at any of
the participating venues. Throughout the next week, participants
will have the opportunity to complete the walk, validating their
passports with stamps from each gallery. Completed passports will
be entered in a drawing for gallery items and certificates at local
restaurants.
The Gallery Walk has
earned a strong reputation over the last 18 years and consistently
brings people from throughout the region to downtown to view the
latest exhibits.
Members of the Durango
Gallery Association are dedicated to the promotion of original and
professional art in Durango. In addition to the Spring Gallery Walk
the association will host a series of "First Friday" events in the
summer months and a Fall Gallery Walk in September. For more

Plein aire painters exhibit work
What: A second exhibit by the Plein Aire Painters of the Four Corners
Where: The Fort Lewis College Art Gallery
When: May 7-26 with an opening reception from 5-8 p.m. on May 7.
The works of the Plein
Aire Painters of the Four Corners pays a second visit to the walls
of the Fort Lewis College Art Gallery beginning this Friday. The
gallery hosts the group's second annual exhibition from May 7-26,
and the public is invited to an opening reception from 5-8 p.m. on
May 7.
The group of professional
artists meets once a month to paint out of doors "en plein aire" at
various locations in the Southwest. All mediums are represented in
this group of 33, including oil, watercolor, acrylic and pastel.
Some of the painters have been in the Top 100 Arts for the Parks,
and many have won awards in national shows. They display their art
in gallery shows at least twice a year. Among the places they have
painted this past year include McElmo Canyon, Lime Creek, Moab and
Mesa Verde.
Some of the Plein Aire
Painters who will be exhibiting are Sharon Abshagen, Karl Brenner,
Gayle Button, Marilyn Campbell, Jane Clayton, John Cogan, Mary
Culpepper, Jan Goldman, Dwight Lawing, Fran Mayfield, Judy Morgan,
Mary Ellen Morrow, Connie Morse, Bill Randall, Dave Sime, Kathy
Walling and Lori Walters.
The Fort Lewis College
Art Gallery is located on campus southwest of the Community Concert
Hall. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
