Storyville presents Athens' Tishamingo
What: A roots rock band from Athens, Georgia
Where: Storyville, 1150 Main Ave.
When: Friday, March 19, at 9:30 p.m.
Swampy southern rock will
hit the Storyville stage this Friday. Based out of Athens, Georgia,
Tishamingo is a quartet that reaches into the '60s and '70s for the
roots of its blues-based rock & roll. The band is noted for its
soulful singing, honest lyrics and two-guitar interplay reminiscent
of the bands that inspired them.
Tishamingo has toured
extensively in the South and has broken ground with numerous shows
in Colorado. The band recnetly released a self-titled debut album
of original songs, which was produced by John Keane who has
collaborated with the likes of Widespread Panic, R.E.M., the Cowboy
Junkies and others. Keane plays steel guitar and banjo on a couple
of the album's cuts.
Tishamingo's sound has
been likened to Government Mule and the Allman Brothers Band, and
members of the band have played with Widespread Panic, the Derek
Trucks Band, B.B. King and Kenny Wayne Sheppard.
Jambase.com has called
Tishamingo "swampwise" and said the band is "very much at home with
Gregg Allman and John Bell on the front porch."
Flagpole Magazine wrote, "Inspired by outfits like the
Allman Brothers Band and Government Mule, Tishamingo drinks from
the Lynyrd Skynrd well too, with searing guitar work and a knack
for telling stories lyrically."
This Friday, Tishamingo
goes on stage at Storyville at 9:30 p.m. For more information call
259-1475.

Shakespeare comes to Durango
What: A high caliber production of "Richard III"
Where: The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
When: Saturday, March 20, at 7 p.m.
William Shakespeare is
paying a visit to the Durango stage courtesy of the "Shakespeare in
American Communities" tour. The Acting Company, one of the nation's
top theatre companies, will present "Richard III" this Saturday at
the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.
"Shakespeare in American
Communities" is a 50-state, 100-community tour made possible by the
National Endowment for the Arts. Durango was one of the communities
selected.
"It is rare that we would
choose to stage a theatrical performance at the Community Concert
Hall," said Gary Penington, concert hall managing director. "But
when the opportunity for a great show comes our way, we don't pass
it up."
"Richard III" is the
historical tale of England's bloody War of the Roses. King
Richard's manipulative path to the English throne is depicted
through his lust of power by murdering and exploiting everyone and
everything in his way. The play creatively casts the audience as
Richard's accomplices as they witness his deceptive slayings of his
brother, King Edward; the Duke of Clarence; and his nephews, the
two young princes.
"A great nation deserves
great art," said National Endowment for the Arts Chairperson Dana
Gioia. "We are proud to present to America the greatest playwright
in the English language. And we are proud to present performances
of the highest caliber."
The Acting Company was
founded in 1972 and has performed nearly 80 plays in 48 different
states and nine foreign countries. In the past, the Acting Company
has given a start to famous actors such as Kevin Kline, Patti
LuPone, Jessie L. Martin, Lorraine Toussaint and David Ogden
Stiers.
The curtain rises this
Saturday, March 20, at 7 p.m. For more information call
247-7657.

Take Risk ... Blow Kiss'
What: A farewell performance by actor Caitlin Eddins and musician Holly Hieronymus
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Thursday, March 18, at 7 p.m.
Two local artists will
celebrate dream chasing with a performance this Thursday at the
Abbey Theatre. Durango natives Holly Hieronymus and Caitlin Eddins
will soon leave town to pursue their dreams of succeeding in the
performing arts. However, as an effort to say good-bye they will
perform one last time for Durango.
The first act will
consist of a short play by Bash Halow, entitled, "Forward Motion
Matters." Directed by and starring Eddins, the play is a glance at
a couple flying over a war-torn world in a luxury jet. A comic look
at post-911 anxieties is twisted throughout the scenes.
Eddins is a graduate of
the Durango High School Theatre Troupe 1096 and has a degree in
theatre from Stephans College. Eddins plans to take her long
history with theatre to New York City to pursue a career in
acting.
Local musician Holly
Hieronymus takes the stage for the second half of the show. The
locally known pianist, singer and songwriter will share her
original music. Hieronymus' blues rhythms have been entertaining
local crowds for years.
Hieronymus has competed
in and played the piano since a very young age. Music has consumed
much of her life and she trained at The School of Music at Meredith
College. Like Eddins, Hieronymus plans to eventually create a
career with her talents.
The performance takes
place at the Abbey Theatre this Thursday, March 18. The doors will
open at 7 p.m., and the curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. For more
information on the event, call 385-1711.
