A dynamic collection of works on paper
created during the last 28 years by Fort Lewis College Art
Department Chair and Professor of Art Laurel Vogl will be on display at the Fort Lewis
College Art Gallery from March 15 - April 1. The exhibition
features handmade paper constructions, water color paintings and
her most recent works with a zig zag design element. An artist's

An exhibit of vintage
black and white fashion
and jazz photography by Gleb Derujinsky is currently on display in the Open
Shutter Gallery through April 5. In the 1950s, local photographer

Celtdown returns to Arts Center
What: The second annual Durango "Celtdown"
Where: The Durango Arts Center, 802 E. Second Ave.
When: Saturday, March 13 at 2 & 7 p.m.
The Durango Arts Center
kicks off the St. Patrick's holiday a few days early with some
Irish jigs, tunes and stories. The second annual Durango "Celtdown"
will be held Saturday, March 13, and because last year's Celtdown
sold out quickly, a second show has been added this year. A matinee
will run at 2 p.m. and an evening show is set for 7 p.m.
This year's shows will
feature music from the local Irish band, Beltaine. The band
consists of members Kevin Dawson, Steve Cunningham, Linda
Cunningham, Elizabeth Vaught and Amanda Ryan. The band plays a
variety of instruments to achieve an authentic Irish musical
experience utilizing everything from penny-whistles to bodhrans and
bouzoukis.
In addition to a
performance by Beltaine, Celtdown also will feature Irish dancers,
storyteller Sara Ransom, and local Celtic harpist Sylvia Zurko. A
cash bar and door prizes will round out the all-ages
event.
Tickets are available at
the door or by calling DAC at 259-2606. Children 12 and younger get
into Celtdown for free.

Daffodil Days come to Durango
What: A fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society
Where: Curves, The Durango Mall and Wal-Mart
When: March 13-21
Daffodils are considered
a symbol of hope, and in this spirit the American Cancer Society
will be offering the flowers in advance of their normal blooming
schedule in the hopes of jumpstarting spring. The American Cancer
Society's first Durango Daffodil Days fund-raiser will be held
during the coming week, March 13-21. Locals will have the
opportunity to buy a bouquet of 10 daffodils for $10, with all
proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer
Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health
problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing
cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the
Society has 15 regional divisions and local offices in 3,400
communities, including Durango.
Flowers can be ordered
from Curves on Florida Road at any time and picked up between March
13 and 20. Bouquets also will be available at the Durango Mall on
March 13 and 20 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and on March 14 & 21 from
11 a.m.-3 p.m. They can also be bought at Wal-Mart on March 20
& 21 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Carlos Washington highlights St. Patrick's Day
What: A concert by Carlos Washington and The Amazing Giant People

Jazz/funk master Carlos
Washington will heat up the Abbey Theatre dance floor for St.
Patrick's Day this Wednesday. The former member of Karl Denson's
Tiny Universe will take the stage with his band, The Amazing Giant
People, at 9 p.m.
As a child, Washington
was exposed to music through singing in the church choir and
experimenting with piano. He eventually developed a passion for the
trumpet courtesy of school bands, orchestras and private lessons.
At 18, Washington enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps
Band.
Washington eventually
teamed up with Karl Denson, original sax man for Lenny Kravitz.
After a two year campaign with Denson's Tiny Universe, Carlos
partnered with the aggressive Fruition Multi Media Group to create
The Amazing Giant People Ensemble.
The current ensemble
consists of Berklee School of music attendee, John Milham, on
Drums; Sean Peterson, of Col. Bruce Hamptons' Codetalkers, on bass;
and blues veteran Corky Hughes on guitar. The group has developed a
live show concept for 2004 it is calling the "sonic circus." All
three rings should be on hand when the doors open at 8 p.m. next
