I mages of Italy at Open Shutter
What: An exhibit by local photographer Paul Boyer
Where: Open Shutter Gallery, 755 E. Second Ave.
When: . Jan. 16-Feb. 14 with a reception Jan. 16 from 5-8 p.m.
Open Shutter Gallery
brings the faces, landscapes and architecture of Italy to Durango
beginning this Friday. An exhibit titled "italia" by local
photographer Paul Boyer will be on display at the gallery from Jan.
16 through Feb. 14.
Boyer completed a Ph.D
program in Italian and comparative literature in 1974 and, in spite
of choosing a career in photography, still has a strong love for
all things Italian. In this spirit, "italia" showcases in vivid
color the people, landscapes and architecture of Italy. Since the
beginning of his photography career in 1974, Boyer has worked to
produce work that has relevance to a wide variety of people and
interests. In addition to commercial assignments, Boyer works on
self-assigned projects to test new tools and techniques, as well as
to satisfy his need for artistic expression. One of these projects,
a study of 100 centenarians from around the United States and
Canada, resulted in the 1990 publication of a book, One Hundred Over 100 .
A reception for Boyer and
"italia" will be held at the gallery this Friday, Jan. 16, from 5-8
p.m. Call 382-8355 for more information.

Concert Hall hosts New Shanghai Circus
What: A performance by the renowned Chinese acrobats
Where: The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
When: Monday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m.
Chinese acrobats will
again take center stage at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis
College. This Monday, the venue will host the acclaimed New
Shanghai Circus. The troupe combines the physical skills and
endurance of the Chinese art with the latest in theater technology
to create a fast-moving, high-energy show of light, music, color
and movement.
"The New Shanghai Circus
is extremely professional and may just be the best Chinese acrobats
we have enjoyed in Durango,"said Gary Penington, concert hall
managing director. "In their own country they are revered as the
finest acrobatic performers."
The Shanghai Magic and
Acrobatic Troupe, for which the New Shanghai Circus is the overseas
touring arm, was formed in 1959. The New Shanghai Circus places the
greatest emphasis on large-scaled magic and acrobatics and in
recent years, has secured a wealth of young artistic performers who
have won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in competition. In 1999,
the troupe realized a long-held dream when it was invited to
perform on Broadway, and the sold-out show received the "Best
Foreign Production on Broadway"award that year.
Next Monday, the New
Shanghai Circus takes the stage at 7 p.m. For more information or
tickets, call 247-7657.
