Manna hosts Community Dinner
What: A free community meal
Where: Manna Soup Kitchen, 1100 Avenida del Sol
When: . Christmas Day from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
The Manna Soup Kitchen has been thriving since it opened
its doors last December at its new location at 1100 Avenida del Sol. More than 150 volunteers
rally to feed between 80 and 90 people a day. Director and inspirational leader, Kim Workman, said
everyone from people in need to those just wanting a warm meal are welcome.
This Thursday, for Christmas, Manna Soup Kitchen is
reviving a tradition that hasn't been available for many years. From 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., the
kitchen will turn out a community Christmas dinner.
Randy Geist, chairman of the Manna Board of Directors, said
the meal will be in the spirit of sharing. "It's an opportunity to share the wealth," he said. "We
have a big Thanksgiving dinner and a bunch of people take part and then when Christmas rolled
around we weren't doing anything.
Geist added, "We want to provide a fun Christmas time for
the community and especially people who don't have any options." For more information on the event

Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band returns
What: A New Year's Eve performance
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
When: Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 10 p.m.
After a months-long hiatus, the Broke Mountain Bluegrass
Band returns to Durango for New Year's Eve at the Summit. The band formed in Jan. of 2002 when two
guys from North Carolina walked into Canyon Music Woodworks, picked up instruments and started
jamming. A local dobro player was working that day, and they all got together later and picked the
night away, and the Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band was born. The band includes: Anders Beck on
dobro, Robin Davis on mandolin, Travis Book on bass, Andy Thorn on banjo and Rick Hauchman on
guitar.
The band's hard-driving, high-energy bluegrass earned a
respectable local reputation and strong local following prior to a temporary break-up at the end
of last summer. The Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band's appeal is not unique to Durango. This summer
the combination of traditional bluegrass and youthful energy won the band the Rockygrass Band
Contest, earning it a spot on next year's Rockygrass stage.
Next Wednesday, the boys from North Carolina and Durango
return to take the stage at the Summit at 10 p.m. For more information, call 247-2324.

Motet rings in the New Year at the Abbey
What: Americubafrican Grooves from the Motet
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Wednesday, Dec. 31
The Motet is coming back to Durango next week and bringing
its unique "electric Americubafrican groove" to the Abbey Theatre to ring in 2004. Long a Durango
music favorite, the Motet will present a unique show for New Year's Eve, covering the music of
Afrobeat master Fela Kuti and blending the Motet's afro-cuban jamming with '70s afrobeat funk.
Durango's own Fara Tolno will open up the show with a set of West African pop fusion.
The Motet continues to rise in the American improv-touring
band scene. The Boulder-based band draws large audiences with its world beats and hard groove.
Attempting to describe the Motet's sound, with its Latin jazz textures, dirty funk grooves, West
African & Cuban drum rhythms and sax work, is next to impossible.
The band includes: Dave Watts on drums, Scott Messersmith
on percussion, Greg Raymond on keyboards, Garret Sayers on bass and Mark Donovan on guitar. The
combination is working. Jambase.com raved, "The Motet is as groovy as ever, knocking down the
walls with its hyper beats and pulsating sound."
For more information, call 385-1711.
