Open Shutter showcases "From Ely to Iberia"
What: An exhibit by Utah photographer Michael Plyler

Acclaimed Utah photographer Michael Plyler is bringing his
black and white architectural photography to the walls of the Open Shutter Gallery. The show,
entitled "From Ely to Iberia," runs Nov. 21-Dec. 13.
"From Ely to Iberia" showcases Plyler's longtime interest
in the beauty of manmade forms. He has traveled widely, and the work in this show comes from many
parts of the world. Plyler's prints are handcrafted using traditional darkroom processes.
In 1983, Plyler received a commission from the Guatemalan
Tourist institute, which led to the first international showing of his work at its headquarters.
He has been photographing the Mayan Indians of Guatemala since 1982. Plyler also was the 1993
recipient of a Visual Artist Fellowship from The Utah Arts Council. His work is held in numerous
public and private collections on three continents, including the Heard Museum, the San Diego
Museum of Man, Museum of the American Indian, and the Graham Nash Collection. Plyler is also a
co-founder and current director of his the Utah Canyons Workshops.
Plyler and the Open Shutter Gallery will host an artist's

A day of arts and culture at the Abbey
What: A benefit for the River Mist Learning Community
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Saturday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
River Mist Learning Community will host A Day of Arts and
Culture at the Abbey Theatre for families and people of all ages this Saturday. The day will
include live acoustic music from favorite local musicians and an organic lunch. Attendees also
will find clowns, face painting, children's activities, a fatherhood circle, a drum and dance
performance by the Matam Collective and special guest Fara Tolno, and a chance to bid on a wide
variety of items donated for the silent auction.
Originally from Guinea, West Africa, Fara Tolno has been
studying traditional West African dance, drum, song and culture since the age of 9. Playing djembe
since that time, he has traveled extensively teaching drumming and dance, including two years as
African drum and culture instructor at Fort Lewis College. Fara Tolno has performed throughout
Africa, Europe and the United States and performed with Youssou N'Dour, the Tap Collective and
Roxanne Butterfly, and opened for Burning Spear.
The proceeds from the event will benefit River Mist, a
school with the purpose of involving children in the cultivation of a rich, sustainable
environment where all members of the community learn to balance freedom and responsibility.
Located northeast of Durango on County Road 225, the school has programs for children ages 1-8 and
is situated on 8 acres on the Florida River.

Summit brings Chronophonic to town
What: A show from the Denver funk and jazz band
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
When: Saturday, Nov. 22 at 9 p.m.
An eight-piece, funk/hip hop/jazz group will take the
Summit's stage this Saturday. The Denver-based band has been winning fans across Colorado and
positioning itself to captivate the rest of the nation. Featuring a four-piece horn section led
by Downbeat Magazine's 2002 winner of outstanding performance by a jazz instrumental soloist,
Chronophonic's unique sound is taking hold in the original music scene. With a four-piece rhythm
section complimented by four horns and two vocalists, the group morphs elements of jazz, funk and
hip hop into a distinct sound.
Band members' influences range from James Brown and The
Roots to Primus and Radiohead, all of which can be identified in the band's music. Performing
primarily along the Front Range, the band does around 75 gigs a year and has shared the stage with
bands like Vinyl, The Motet, Granola Funk Express and Yo' Flaco. In addition, Chronophonic's
self-titled debut album has charted on six radio stations and received airplay in more than 25
states. The band will go on stage at 9 p.m.
