What: The first performance in the Alexander Murray Faculty Recital Series
 Where: Roshong Recital Hall
 When: Sunday, Sept. 14, 7 p.m.

The 2003-04 Alexander Murray Faculty Recital Series opens
its season this Sunday with a recital featuring Professor of Music Rochelle Mann on flute and
Associate Professor of Music John Pennington on percussion. The duo has performed together for
more than 10 years and has been featured in performances across North America.

The recital will display a full range of expression for
these two instruments, which have been historically linked for centuries. "During the last 20
years there has been a momentous development of repertoire for this specific instrumentation,"
      said Pennington.

An example of this new repertoire will be Dan Welcher's
"Spirit Realms," an expansive work in three movements written in 1996 for flute and
percussion. Welcher writes for the C flute, doubling alto flute and piccolo, as well as for an
elaborate palette of evocative percussion sounds.

The evening's featured work is Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla's "Histoire du Tango" (History
of the Tango). Originally written for flute and guitar, it has been arranged here for marimba and
flute. This four-movement work displays tangos from different periods of time throughout the past
      century.

      Completing the recital will be a special appearance by guitarist and vocalist Cyprian Consiglio;
violinist and Visiting Instructor of Music Mikylah Myers McTeer; and cellist and Assistant
Professor of Music Katherine Tischhauser. This trio will perform a new work composed by Consiglio
      and Pennington.
