Storyville drags the river
What: A show by Fort Collins' Drag the River
Where: Storyville, 1150 Main Ave.
When: Saturday, Aug. 30, 9:30 p.m.

If Labor Day weekend seems an appropriate time for beer drinking and bitter recriminations, stop by Storyville this Saturday night for a dose of hard country with Fort Collins' Drag the River. The band's members consist of songwriters Jon Snodgrass and Chad Price, both on guitar; drummer Paul Rucker; bassist J.J. Nobody; and Zach Boddicker, on pedal steel. With three albums to its credit, "Live at the Starlight," "Closed" and "Hobo's Demos," Drag the River is beginning a West Coast tour in early September.

This Saturday, Durangoans can expect a high-energy show with arrangements that are tight and well orchestrated, highlighted by the gut-wrenching sounds of Boddicker's pedal steel. Although Drag the River's subject matter is often serious, their delivery is comically optimistic with a style that goes out on a limb without losing touch with its back-porch roots. Lyrically, the songs touch on deep issues including addiction, obsession, lost love, bad choices and good, old-fashioned sin and redemption.

Fans will be happy to note that another album is forthcoming. Snodgrass confirmed: "We are recording the next album in my garage. We have demoed some stuff and will hopefully blaze through it when we get back from tour in late September."

So what do you do when you drag the river? You plunge into the depths of the dark waters of the unconscious, dredge up what scares you the most, and recreate yourself. Oh and have a shot whiskey while you're at it.

Concert Hall presents Yonder Mountain String Band
What: An evening of live jamgrass
Where: Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall
When: Wednesday, Sept. 3, 7 p.m.

Revered for expanding the horizons of bluegrass music with an improvised, super-charged melding of bluegrass, rock and reggae, Yonder Mountain String Band members are revered for their musicianship and dexterity at interweaving songs.Unlike other Colorado jam bands, Yonder Mountain stays rooted in bluegrass and folk, so no electronic effects enhance the music. The quartet will once again wow Durango audiences as it returns to the Community Concert Hall Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. Durango local Benny Galloway, songwriter on their latest album, will open and perform one acoustic set.

Mary Houlihan of the Chicago Sun Times wrote: "Two sorts of fans appreciate the music of Yonder Mountain String Band ... the twirly, hippie Grateful Dead leftovers who know a good jam when they hear one, and Yonder Mountain does a good one.But there are also the older, less-movable listeners who appreciate the band's energetic ties to traditional bluegrass."

Featuring Adam Aijala on acoustic guitar, Jeff Austin on mandolin, Dave Johnston on banjo and Ben Kaufmann on upright bass, Yonder Mountain is known for its prolific songwriting. However, during its live performances, the band doesn't shy away from playing nontraditional cover songs and has been known to pay homage to a range of artists, from Peter Tosh to The Beatles to Ozzy Osbourne.

"We're pleased to have Yonder Mountain back at the Community Concert Hall," said Gary Penington, hall managing director. " They're exposing a whole new generation of fans to bluegrass. YMSB can play a three-minute bluegrass traditional with passion and technical skill, and it can just as easily jam out an original tune for an hour."

For information and ticketing call 247-7657.

What: An all-day festival featuring Arlo Guthrie, Creedence Clearwater Revisited and more
Where: The Columbine Base Area at Durango Mountain Resort
When: Saturday, Aug. 30, noon to 6:30 p.m.

The second annual Wildflower Music Festival goes off this Saturday, Aug. 30, outdoors at Durango Mountain Resort's Columbine Events Center. Creedence Clearwater Revisited includes original members Stu Cook and Doug "Cosmo" Clifford, as well as Elliot Easton, former lead guitarist for The Cars. The band launched in 1995 with the intent of playing classic CCR hits only for private parties. The new CCR ended up playing a couple of promotional concerts but public demand led to its current tour with 100 dates a year. Revisited has released a double live album, "Recollection."

Arlo Guthrie, son of beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie, is known best for the "Motorcycle Song," "Alice's Restaurant," "Coming into Los Angeles" and "City of New Orleans." He is a renowned musician and storyteller, playing piano, six- and 12-string guitar, harmonica, and a dozen other instruments.

The Columbine Events Center, located at DMR's winter Columbine Learning Area, is set up with the Needles Peaks as backdrop and seating up the ski run. Food and art vendors will ring the arena, and a huge inflatable children's entertainment area will sit at the top. Wildflower Music Festival tickets also will be good for unlimited use of the Alpine Slide, Mini-golf, Disc Golf, Chair 4 Uplift and the Human Maze on Saturday.
