Cajun roots band plays Storyville
What: A concert by New Orleans-based Sol Fiya
Where: Storyville, 1150 Main Ave.
When: Aug. 15, 9:30 p.m.
Looking for a
taste of Cajun soul food? Head down to Storyville Friday night and
catch Sol Fiya, a funky blues band from New
Orleans.
Sol Fiya is an energetic,
lively Louisiana band whose influences include Taj Mahal, Dr. John
and John Mooney. With mentors like that, what band could capture
the sound of New Orleans better? Their music also has tastes of
bayou funk, jam based songs, inspirational gospel and down home
blues. They got their start in New Orleans three years ago and have
become local favorites there.
New Orleans' Weekly Freak magazine paid tribute to the five piece
band, saying, "Sol Fiya is like a thriving crawfish boil in ya back
yard making more fun and music love than grown adult freaks like me
can stand. Bring it on. These roots are some of the deepest I've
heard."

Indians and their struggles and lives.

Dancer received the Tuscan/Pima Arts Council
Literary Award and the 2001 International Poetry Prize. Though she
has been published in more than 200 journals and anthologies, this
is Uschuk's second book of poems. She also penned Finding Peaches in the Desert .
The Winston-Salem Journal described Uschuk's works as, "rich,
vibrant poems that invite readers into a world of color and
motion."

An evening of singing and songwriting

Where: Haggard's Black Dog Tavern, 10 miles east of Durango on Florida Road
When: Aug. 14, 7 p.m.
Acoustic
Durango, a monthly singer-songwriters' showcase featuring national
and local talent, will present its August show on Thursday, Aug.
14. Hosted by local artist Sally Shuffield, the acoustic evening
takes place at Haggard's Black Dog Tavern.
Thursday night's show
will feature Tony Garcia, from Nashville, and Lenny Rickets and
Karen Mason, both of Durango. Garcia hails from Washington, D.C.,

be released this fall.
Lenny Rickets, a Durango
resident for the past seven years, is known for his folk music
laced with blues, pop, twang and gospel. He's been writing and
playing music since the age of 13 and describes his music as "a
little rough around the edges but all in good humor."
Karen Mason returns to
Acoustic Durango for her second performance. She says her songs are
heartfelt and inspired by the Southwest. She used to sing for the
local band Heart and Soul, which is starting to perform again in
the area.
