Hardrockers Holidays returns to Silverton
What: A traditional mining celebration
Where: Silverton's Kendall Mountain Recreation Area
When: August 8-10
One of the only remaining mining
competitions in Colorado, Hardrockers Holidays takes place this
weekend in Silverton. The event features traditional events like
machine and hand mucking, machine drilling, single jacking,
wheelbarrow races, men and women's tug-o-war, arm wrestling and
more.
Hardrockers Holidays also
offers an All-Around-Women's Pentathlon Competition, which includes
a wheel barrow race, novice machine mucking, hand mucking, single
jacking and spike driving.
Admission to the
weekendlong affair is free and includes tons of events for
spectators and competitors. Camping is available, and food and
beverage vendors will be on hand. The band "Tucson y Los Amigos"
will kick off the weekend with a free show, Friday, Aug. 8, at 8:30
p.m.

The Abbey hosts the Motet
What: A concert by the Boulder improv band

Boulder-based improv band The
Motet will bring its unique sound to the Abbey Theatre this Friday
night at 8 p.m.
The band, which mixes
Cuban, West African, funk, soul and jazz, was hailed by Michael
Henningsen of The Alibi , an Albuquerque weekly, as
"rootsy and steeped in African rhythms and groovalicious funk" with
music "sure to infect."
"It's a convergence of
dance music and free-form improvisation that could turn out to be
one of the most satisfying musical experiences you've had since the
dawn of the 21st Century," he wrote.
Based out of Boulder, the
quintet features, Dave Watts, on drums; Scott Messersmit, on
percussion; Greg Raymond, on keyboards; Garret Sayers, on bass; and
Mark Donavan, on guitar. The Motet was formed in 1998 on the basis
of dedicating itself to expanding improvisational horizons. The
band's shows are known for being unpredictable and lively. After
its stop in Durango, the band will embark on an East Coast
tour.

"Fun is the Key" at this year's fair
What: The 55th annual La Plata County Fair
Where: The La Plata County Fairgrounds
When: Aug. 6-10
Over the course of this week, Aug.
6-10, the county fair returns to the La Plata County Fairgrounds,
promising something for the whole family. Events like the 7
th annual Demolition Derby, livestock
shows, food competitions and the ever-popular carnival rides
highlight the fair, which has been themed "Fun is the Key in
2003."
This years' demolition derby will
accept compact cars into the smash up for the first time, but only
if they meet certain requirements. Prize money, jackets and
trophies will be awarded to the top five placers. Every year, the
La Plata County Fair also highlights tomorrow's farmers and
ranchers through 4-H Club competitions. Animals like goats, cattle,
poultry, sheep, swine and sheep dogs will have opportunities to
shine in open class events. The livestock auction, the fair's most
popular spectator event, takes place Saturday, Aug. 9, at 6:30
p.m.
Spectators should also keep their eye
out for horse shows, which will include showmanship, western and
dressage, and jumping. The gymkhana, which features riders
competing in western disciplines, takes place Sunday, Aug.
10.
Local vendors also will
have their goods for sale in the exhibition hall of the
fairgrounds, and concession stands will offer everything from
funnel cakes to snow cones and curly fries. For more information
