Taking organ and percussion to new levels
What: The Marco Benevento & Joe Russo Duo
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
When: Thursday, July 31, 9:30 p.m.
This Thursday, the Summit
will be hosting the Marco Benevento & Joe Russo Duo, a band
that's been lauded by Jambase
as one of New York City's
"greatest live music gigs." Benevento and Russo's act seems simple
with a look at their instruments: a no-bells-or-whistles drum kit
and a well-traveled organ jury-rigged with a variety of pedals and
gadgets. However, the sound is complex and has been charging NYC
and now all points west on tour.
Joe Russo plays drums
with a blend of precision and passion. According to Jambase , "He plays as if basked in strobe
lights, pulsing rhythms out of his unassuming visage like pulses of
light momentarily freezing everything around him."
Accompanying Russo is his
longtime friend Marco Benevento on organ. Benevento fills the role
of bassist, lead guitarist, rhythm guitarist, horn section and, of
course organ, and he alternately fills all the musical "space"
available to him, purposefully leaving empty gaps to punctuate
it.
The music itself has been
described as "genre-busting, altogether original, and entirely
fresh, crisp stuff."
The duo plays at 9:30
p.m. Thursday, July 31. 247-2324 for details.
