Local tunes meet independent film
What: The Gadabout Film Festival
and a performance by Catalyst

This Saturday night, the Abbey Theatre presents
a night of independent film followed by music from
the local band Catalyst. The traveling Gadabout
Film Festival will be in town for one night only
and is an excellent opportunity to celebrate independent
film.
Featuring an eclectic mix of more than 15 shorts,
the festival features filmmakers from all over the
country as well as international locales including
India, Argentina, Israel and Singapore. Film subjects
range from a documentary on exile and loss in Cuba
to a fictional affair between the driver of an Austin-Mini
and a dark, handsome VW Driver. The New York-based
festival will eventually visit 30 cities in six
weeks.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and at 10:30 p.m. the band
Catalyst will take the stage. This local jam-based
groove band is known for its diversity on stage,
playing everything from reggae to rock to jazz to
bluegrass, and they are sure to get you on your
feet. Tickets are available for both shows or either
one.
Meanwhile, the Abbey will continue screening the
Academy Award nominated foreign film “Prisoner
of the Mountains” at 7 p.m. and “Laurel
Canyon” at 9 p.m.
On July 27, the Abbey will begin showing “Read
My Lips,” a Cinderella story about a deaf

The King and Queen of rockcrawling
What: The Superlift ProROCK
National Championship Series
Where: Avalanche Ranch near

Over the next two weekends, a high-caliber athletic
event of a different color will be blowing into
the Durango area. The nationally known 4x4 Superlift
ProROCK National Rockcrawling Championship will
be presented at Avalanche Ranch Off Road Park near
Ignacio beginning this Saturday.
On July 26-27, the men will battle for the coveted
title of King of the Rocks. Not to be outdone, women
will get behind the wheel next weekend and vie for
the Queen of the Rocks title. Competition will begin
at 9 a.m. each day. On Friday, July 25, the public
can meet the drivers, who will be on-hand at the
Sky Ute Casino between noon and 5 p.m.
This event will be full of hard-core 4x4 action
as the competitors hammer the rock courses, themselves
and their vehicles. Tickets are available daily
or for the whole weekend. Camping and concessions
also will be available onsite at the Avalanche Ranch.

A night at the Rocket
What: A benefit celebration
of the Rocket and all drive-ins
Where: The Rocket Drive-In

7:15 p.m.
Blankets, popcorn and old cars are all part of
a nostalgic evening at Durango’s Rocket Drive-In.
This Thursday night, the American Red Cross and
the American Cancer Society will host a benefit
event at the Rocket to raise funds and to celebrate
the drive-in movie theater.
Admission will be $20 a carload so you cram all
your friends and family in. Two local car clubs
will have their classics on display and people also
are encouraged to bring their own vintage automobiles
to take part in the show. In true drive-in fashion,
the first two rows of speakers will be reserved
for the cars lacking FM radio.
The gates open at 7:15 p.m., and the movies will
be “American Drive-In,” a documentary
about drive-in theaters in their heyday, and “The
Hulk.” The first film also includes vintage
commercials.
