Mountain Run, one of the premier running events in the region, will

Kendall Mountain from the town of Silverton, which is situated at
an elevation of 9,318 feet. The 13-mile course follows a rough and
steep four-wheel-drive road to a point where runners must scramble
a scree slope to the summit. The descent follows the same course
and ends at the historic Silverton Town Hall on 14th

Aug. 17, 1908, run up the mountain by local miner Neal McQuieg, who
was reportedly on the far side of 50 and the first to run up the
face of Kendall. As legend goes, Charlie Worden bet saloon owner
Jack Slattery $200 that McQuieg could make the run up and back in
an hour and a half.Worden barely lost his wager when McQuieg
finished in 1:31.42. - Seventy years later, on July 30, 1978,
the first official race was held on today's designated race
