Summit hosts June Jamboree
What: A show featuring the bluegrass stylings of Mary and Mars and Broke Mountain
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
When: Monday, June 16, 8:30 p.m.
The Summit will be hosting Mr.
Hat's June Jamboree this Monday with music from Broke Mountain, a
new local bluegrass band that includes members of the Salty Dogs,
and Santa Fe acoustic bluegrass trio, Mary and
Mars.
Formerly knows as the Backsliders, Mary
and Mars includes Sharon Gilchrist on mandolin, Dan Wright on
guitar, and Josh Martin on bass.
Gilchrist has been
playing mandolin since she was 9 and was one of the original Dixie
Chicks in the early 1990s. Wright, known for his fast, clean
picking, was a finalist in the Rockygrass guitar competition.
Rounding out the trio, Martin plays bass, mandolin, dobro and
guitar. He has performed in the Broadway show Woody Guthrie's
"American Song ."
Mary and Mars' sound is
described as bluegrass, but its sound bends the genre with hints of
gypsy jazz, Latin, Motown and classic rock. The band formed in April
of 2002 and has played hundreds of shows to a fan base that is
growing exponentially. Labeled as "the hottest up-and-coming
bluegrass-oriented act in New Mexico," by Thirsty Ear Magazine , Mary and Mars is guaranteed to get
everyone on their feet. 247-2324 for details.

"After Dark" graces Diamond Circle
What: The Diamond Circle Melodrama's 42nd season
Where: The Diamond Circle Theatre, 699 Main Ave.
When: Nightly, 7:45 p.m.
The Diamond Circle Melodrama's
42nd season has arrived with the opening of the play, "After Dark,"
written by Dion Boucicault and directed by Dr. Ginny A.
Davis.
Full of suspense, love,
double crossing and mistaken identity, "After Dark" follows a young
woman, played by Kris Danford, as she searches for her real father.
After leaving her fianc`E9, she embarks on a journey through the
London underground. As she searches in vain, her former fianc`E9,
played by Jonathan Halsell, is heckled by the villains, played by
Eric Sharp and Helen Gregory.
Intertwined in both
conflicts is a poor, homeless drunk, played effectively by Tim
Ballard, trying to get his act together. Ashley Burton plays the
roles of a London socialite and a street urchin, executing both
roles with credibility and energy. In the spirit of "melodrama,"
the show features strong on-stage emotions, excellent choreography
and fast action that draws the audience in.
Following the play, the
Diamond Circle Vaudeville Revue takes the stage with skits full of
dancing, singing and slapstick comedy. They vary from all-American
tributes to a scenario from "The Wizard of Oz." A rendition by Tom
Ballard and Helen Gregory of hillbillies singing about farm life is
sure to be an audience favorite. The two come on stage three or
four times and have the audience laughing harder with each
subsequent visit.
For more information on
the double-bill, contact the Diamond Circle Theatre at
247-3400.

Steaming Bean hosts Ellis
What: A concert by singer-songwriter Ellis
Where: The Steaming Bean, 915 Main Ave.
When: Friday, June 13, 7 p.m.
Singer,
songwriter and guitarist Ellis will perform a donation-only show at
the Steaming Bean this Friday as she tours in support of her new,
fourth album,"Tigers Above, Tigers Below." Recorded in a house in
New Orleans in January 2003, the album has been described by the
Spokane, Wash., Local Planet
as "a work of sobering folk
rock beauty, bringing deeper lush instrumentation to Ellis' already
firm grasp on lyrical prowess."
Ellis is a charismatic
singer-songwriter who has won a devoted following throughout the
Midwest and beyond. She released her first CD, "Soft Day," in 1996,
and since then has played hundreds of shows as a solo artist and as
a member of Bobby Llama, a rock-funk band for which she was the
principal songwriter and lead singer.
Unafraid of
revealing herself, Ellis writes songs that are honest and deeply
personal. She also is known for her vibrant and open-hearted
nature. Ellis has been writing songs and performing since
1996.
"Ellis' sincerity, soul
and personality create an instant rapport with her audiences," says
Des Moines, Iowa's, Cityview
.
After her performance she
will continue to tour both coasts and throughout the
Midwest.
