Little Hercules comes to Steamworks
What: An up-and-coming Colorado band
Where: Steamworks, 1150 Main Ave.
When: Friday & Saturday, June 6 & 7, 10 p.m.
Minturn's Little Hercules
is an act that is rising steadily on the state and national music
scene. The band will be bringing its raw soul and funk for two
shows this weekend at Steamworks.
Little Hercules' jam band
sound has been described as soul food music, and its shows always
get people on the dance floor. Denver's Westword called the band's music "reminiscent of
both Cake and Phish's more laid-back, funky meanderings, though
without the sarcasm of the former or the self-indulgence of the
latter."
In recent years, this
recipe has made Little Hercules one of Colorado's top original
acts. As evidence, the band has been invited to tour with Chicago's
Grammy nominee Liquid Soul and has toured with Leo Nocentelli, the
guitarist of the Meters. For this summer, another tour with
Nocentelli and the addition of the Liquid Soul horn section are
being discussed.
Little Hercules also has
performed with the likes of Spearhead, Galactic and Rebirth Brass
Band and has had shows at the New Orleans Jazz Festival for the
last two years. Call 259-9200 for details.

Storyville hosts blues power
What: A concert by Tinsley Ellis
Where: Storyville, 1150 Main Ave.
When: Saturday, June 7, 8 p.m.
Known for giving nonstop,
powerful shows full of Southern-flavored blues and rock, guitarist
Tinsley Ellis will play Storyville this Saturday. Raised in
southern Florida, Ellis picked up his first guitar at age 7. His
musical influences include B.B. King, Otis Rush, Albert King and
Magic Sam. In 1975, Ellis moved to Atlanta and has been playing
ever since. In a storied career that spans eight albums, Ellis has
shared the stage with artists ranging from John Lee Hooker and
James Cotton to the Allman Brothers and Widespread Panic. During
this time he also has earned widespread acclaim.
Rolling Stone wrote, "His nonstop gigging has
sharpened his six string to a razor's edge he achieves
pyrotechnics that rival Beck and Eric Clapton."
The Chicago Sun-Times said that it is difficult to "overstate
the raw power of his music."
Tinsley's most recent
album, "Hell or High Water," has a taste of blues and
Memphis R&B as well as urban funk. Its style migrates from
old-school urban blues to guitar-heavy rock.
Since the 1980s, Ellis has been on the road an average of 200 or
more days per year, and after this return performance in Durango,
he will travel to Europe for shows in France and Spain. Call
259-1475 for details.
