Blending Afropop and Reggae at the Summit
What: A concert by African reggae master Jerri Jheto
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.

Jerri Jheto got his start
in music in his home country of Nigeria. In his early years, he
played with some of the legends of African music, including Victor
Olaiya, King Sunny AdE9, Manu Dibango, Osibisa and Sonny
Okosuns.
Jheto appeared on the
American scene when he came to Los Angeles in the late 1980s to
record an Afro-Pop album entitled “Apartheid.” However,
Jheto’s passion for reggae then led him in a new musical
direction.
Using a blend of reggae
and Afrobeat, Jheto released his breakthrough Album “Silver
& Gold” in 1998. The record received critical acclaim,
generated airplay worldwide and was a finalist at the Crossroads
1999 Music Awards. Jheto’s latest album “Let the People
Decide” was released in 2000. At the 2002 L.A. Black Music
Awards, Jheto was named Best Reggae Performer of the
Year.

Painting in Plein Aire
What: An exhibit by the "Plein Aire Painters of the Four Corners"
Where: Fort Lewis College Art Gallery

The Plein Aire Painters
of the Four Corners is a group of professional artists that meets
once a month to paint out of doors "en plein air" at various
locations throughout the Southwest. In addition to a variety of
perspectives, all media are represented in this group of 33
artists, including oil, watercolor, acrylic and pastel
painters.
In the past year, the
Plein Aire Painters have visited Canyon de Chelly, Electra Lake,
Chaco Canyon, Shalako Ranch and McElmo Canyon. Some of the Plein
Aire Painters exhibiting in the show are: Sharon Abshagon, Gayle
Button, Marilyn Campbell, Jane Clayton, Wanda Coffey, John Cogan,
Mary Culpepper, Jan Goldman, Nancy Hutcheson, Dwight Lawing, Fran
Mayfield, Judy Morgan, Mary Ellen Morrow, Connie Morse, Dave Sime,
Kathy Walling, Al Weber and Phillip West.
An opening reception is
scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 23. The show runs through
June 6, and regular gallery hours are 10 a.m.to 4 p.m.

Betties in Bhutan
What: Free film and slide show of an all-female expedition
Where: Pine Needle Mountaineering, 835 Main Ave.
When: Tuesday, May 27, 7:30 p.m.
Pine Needle
Mountaineering, Backcountry Experience and Osprey Packs will
present a free screening of the ski film “Betties in
Bhutan” and a free slide show by World Cup Freeskiing
Champion Alison Gannett. The film and slide show document the
first-ever ski expedition to Bhutan and the first ski descent of
the northeast face of Hanuman Tibba in India.
Between March 29-April
17, 2002, a team consisting of Gannett, Melissa Mcmanus, Lee Anne
Patterson, Lisa Korthals, Dana Mulitz, Susan Medville and Deb
Curtis became the first to ski in Bhutan, a county that issues only
a few thousand permits to tourists each year.
At the film’s
screening and slide show, there will be hula-hoop lessons for all,
and participants can register to win an Osprey pack. The show takes
place upstairs at Pine Needle Mountaineering. Call 247-8728 for
