Storyville hosts Bonnie “Prince” Billy
What: A concert by genre bender Will Oldham
Where: Storyville, 1150 Main Avenue
When: Thursday, April 24 at 9:30 p.m.
Mixing bluegrass, English folk rock, tender love songs
and dark humor, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, a.k.a. Will Oldham, does not fit neatly into a
single genre of music. His music has also never fit under a single name. He has employed several
different aliases in order to place emphasis on the music rather than his specific
identity.
Since the early nineties, Oldham has been experimenting
with music both with bands and solo under the names Palace, the Palace Brothers and Palace Music.
In 1998, Bonnie “Prince” Billy made his debut and has since released several albums.
Supporting his latest album, Oldham will bring his “Mountains and Deserts Tour” to
Durango on Thursday, April 24. Along with his distinctive style, described as austere, understated,
Appalachian country/folk music, Oldham will bring special guest Brightblack.
Although his sound is unlike any other, Oldham has been
compared to Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, and even Walt Whitman because he has
a unique, singular vision that is tethered to an ancient spirit.
