Rally for the HDs with food, drink and music
When: 6:30 p.m. Thursday
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
Info: 259-3583

The Abbey Theatre will host a Celebration of the HD Mountains, an evening of food, drink, photos, discussion and music by Latin/funk band Samurai Sword Testing.
The nearby HD Mountains Roadless Area, located near Bayfield is threatened by proposed gas well drilling and road construction. Ten years ago, Amoco received approval from the Forest Service to drill 28 wells around the HD Mountains. Only five wells were drilled, and at that time Amoco indicated that drilling was not economic. Now industry is back for another bite. At least 125 new gas wells and 60 miles of new roads are planned for the pristine, undeveloped HD’s.
The event is sponsored by the San Juan Citizens’ Alliance and the HD Mountains Coalition. Donations will be requested at the door.

Jazz Diva graces concert hall
Who: Dianne Reeves
When:
7 p.m. Friday
Where: FLC Community Concert Hall
Info/Tickets: 247-7657

Residents will have a rare chance to enjoy the vocal strengths of Grammy-award winning jazz diva Dianne Reeves.
Recognized for her strong, agile voice, rhythmic virtuosity and improvisational ease, Reeves may have been born to jazz, but she is proud to note that music should have “no boundaries.” Thus, her compelling performances, including taking the stage for the 2002 Winter Olympics, draw upon a world of influences, from Africa to the Caribbean, gospel and rhythm & blues to classic and contemporary pop.
Weaned on all the jazz greats, Reeves pays homage to Sarah Vaughan with “The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan,” the work for which she was nominated and won the 2002 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. This award comes on the heels of Grammy Gold in 2001 in the same category for “In the Moment: Live in Concert.”
“We are very lucky – not just fortunate, lucky – to have Dianne Reeves coming to Durango,” said Concert Hall Director Gary Penington. “We secured her booking before the Olympics and before the 2002 Grammy Awards. Now, we probably wouldn’t be able to afford her. These should be the hottest tickets in the region.”
